Warmest start to spring in 35 years on Thursday
21 March 2025

Thursday's maximum temperature at the University was 20.4 degrees Celsius, around 9 degrees higher than the seasonal norm.
Dr Stephen Burt from the University's Department of Meteorology commented: "The last time we recorded such a warm day this early in spring was back in 1990, when the same temperature (20.4 degrees Celsius) was also reached on 17 March that year.
"The early warmth is particularly notable, as there have only been five occasions since our records began in 1908 that 20 degrees Celsius has been attained earlier in March - the earliest of all was back in 1948, when 21.8 degrees was recorded on 9 March.
"Of course, in March we would normally expect temperatures to rise throughout the month as the Sun gains strength, and our hottest March days are most likely in the closing days - so these are not March all-time records. That record remains 22.8 degrees reached on 29 March in 1965, closely followed by 22.5 degrees on 30 March 2021."
