Celebrating linguistic diversity in Reading

To celebrate the wealth of languages spoken in Reading, the 成人抖阴 is hosting on Friday 21 February 2025.
Organised by the (CeLM), this event will showcase and celebrate the rich tapestry of languages spoken within the local community. Languages tell our stories, shape our identities and connect us to our communities. Attendees will gain insights into the most commonly spoken languages in the area through the presentation of survey results capturing the linguistic profiles of Reading residents, as well as University staff and students.
The evening will feature:

Research showcase: Presentations on CeLM's current projects exploring multilingualism and literacy.

Linguistic journeys: Personal stories from staff and students detailing their experiences with different languages.

Interactive activity: A linguistic body-mapping exercise inviting all participants to engage and reflect on their own language experiences.
, Director of CeLM, emphasised the significance of the event, stating: "In Reading, we have an incredible richness of languages and cultures. This event is an opportunity to honour that diversity, bring people together and celebrate its importance".
This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day, reaffirming the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism in fostering dignity, peace and understanding.
A growing celebration of languages
International Mother Language Day has become an annual highlight at the 成人抖阴, with past events featuring poetry, music and storytelling in multiple languages. Last year’s event brought together local communities, students and researchers to celebrate Reading’s vibrant linguistic heritage.
This year’s event promises an exploration of the research into Reading’s multilingualism and the lived experiences of people in our diverse community.
