Reading students have returned home from a top University rowing championship with nine medals.
Students representing Reading University Boat Club competed in the British Universities and Colleges Sport Head of the River competition in Newcastle between 22 and 23 February.
The team achieved a podium finish in every sculling event, winning gold medals in the men’s and women’s Championship quad, the men’s and women’s Intermediate quad, and the Intermediate Lightweight quad.
The Championship Men’s quads and Intermediate Men’s quads were particularly special events for the Boat Club, as Reading won gold and bronze medals in the former and gold, silver and bronze in the latter.
A total of nine medals meant Reading placed second in the overall university medal table despite only competing in the sculling events. The competition is one of only two meetings of UK university rowing teams every year. This year, 412 crews from 33 universities signed up to compete.
Will Rand, RUBC Director of Rowing, said: “Our success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students. Balancing rowing and studying is not easy, but our team make it look simple all while having fun.
“Our coaches have created a very supportive and empowering environment at Reading University Boat Club and that’s clear to see from a very successful weekend at one of the UK’s top rowing competitions.”
